Abstract

An automotive catalytic converter is one of the most fragile component of the exhaust system and in uences deeply its design. Particoularly, the design of the exhaust pipes should garantee a good uniformity of ow inside the monolith and low pressure gradients in order to achieve a high eciency and durability of the catalytic converter. On the other hand, a high-perfomance engine requires an exhaust system with the minimum pressure drop. The use of a joined approach based on 3D CFD and optimizing tools can highly improve the design fullfilling different objectives: high engine performance, high emission reduction and a long durability of the catalytic converter. The embedded CAD instruments of the CFD code Star-CCM+ can be lead by modeFRONTIER to modify the exhaust system geometry in order to achieve the aforementioned objectives. The numerical methodology was developed and validated on a real exhaust system leading either to increase catalytic convert eciency and to decrease the pressure drop.
