Abstract

InfoWorks CS is a waste water collection system modelling package - it is used to model the sewers that carry the waste and storm water away from homes, businesses and streets. There is no text file that defines an InfoWorks model - the definition is stored in the database architecture of InfoWorks and modified by the user through a dedicated graphical user interface (GUI).
EnginSoft UK Ltd have developed a dedicated Interface using MS Excel which allows InfoWorks CS to be run automatically. The first (current) version supports the verification of the drainage models (to flow survey data) by automatically adjusting a select set of input parameters until the test and simulation output curves are calibrated. There is an efficiency gain since modeFRONTIER achieves this much more efficiently.
V2.0 of the Interface will allow any input parameter to be varied and this will extend the verification support to calibrate soil runoff and wetting parameters - a task which is time consuming and laborious to carry out manually. V2.0 will also be able to offer "smart optioneering" whereby objectives can be set for the water levels (to avoid flooding
for instance) and the engineer will be able to select which inputs he wishes to vary and the range by which to vary them.
This paper describes the work carried out thus far at Wessex Water and benefits and efficiencies gained.
