Abstract

The optimization of engine performances involves various engineering aspects including surely the type of valve train, the shape of the valve lift curve also considering the intake and exhaust system layout.
With the increasing of the computer aided engineering and the request of the global market is necessary to improve the exiting solutions with numerical optimization approaches.
In this work a modeFRONTIER model development it's shown. Starting from desired valve lift curve (coming from 1d engine models) with the use of genetic algorithm tools and Multi Criteria Decision Making strategy is it possible to:

• Design of the spring valve with fatigue analysis (Excel spreadsheets);
• Design of cam profiles checking some kinematic parameters and tribology behavior like Hertz stress, bounce, cam wear and oil film thickness (code Ricardo Valkin);
This approach allows us to simultaneously simulate and optimize both springs and cam profile shapes and other kinematic aspects like loads and stresses with a low CPU time effort.
