Thermo-fluid Dynamics analysis of pellet stove cast iron heat exchanger

Tezza Andrea - Extraflame (Italy)

Abstract

The paper describes the analysis and application to the simulation of pellet stove cast iron heat exchanger. This element allows the heat exchange between combustion’s exhausts and the room air blown by the fan.
The purpose of the analysis has been the optimization of a new configuration, composed of two parts instead of one of the original version, in order to improve the fixing system.
The boundary condition set take into consideration the real wall thickness and materials and the heat exchange between the stove and the room.
The main problems approached during the analysis have been:
• The simplification of heat exchanger and the stove geometry, in order to reduce the number of cells.
• The characterization of the real heat exchange coefficients, taking into consideration the experimental values measured in the original version.

The pellet stove cast iron heat exchanger results allow to analyze the heat exchange between combustion’s exhausts and the room air blown by the fan. The analysis allow the optimization of a new heat exchanger version composed of two parts, but with the same heat exchange efficiency and pressure losses. Experimental values confirm the simulation results.
