Delivery Optimization in External Gear Pumps

Abstract

This works concerns the optimization of external gear pumps. As well known, a crucial aspect of gear pumps and motors is the design of the thrust plates and in particular the geometry of the grooves, connecting, in specific and optimized angular positions, the single vane of the gears to the suction or the delivery zones. With this work, a parameterization of the grooves is developed and, on the basis of simulated results, an optimization with modeFRONTIER is performed.
A complex workflow has been developed by Casappa; the core of this workflow is HYGESim (HYdraulic GEar machine Simulator), a mechanical-hydraulic model allowing a detailed description of the flow inside the gear pumps. The workflow, by controlling at the same time the geometric model of the pump, HYGESim and postprocessing tools, optimizes the geometry of the grooves in order to reduce as possible the noise of the pump, to increase the volumetric efficiency and to avoid cavitation.
This way, optimized geometries have been obtained, without the needing of many prototypes and experimental measurements.
